Auction of Fine Judaica: Rare Printed Books, Manuscripts, Autograph Letters & Graphic Arts

OVERVIEW

After Kestenbaum & Company’s successful November 2021 auction, we are proud to present our winter Judaica auction that contains an especially broad range of fields of interest. The sale can be divided into six primary categories: Rabbinic Autograph Letters (Lots 1-80), Rabbinic Artifacts (Lots 81-88), Manuscripts (Lots 89-106), General Printed Books (Including American-Judaica) (Lots 107-181), Hebrew Printed Books (Lots 182-381), and finally, Ceremonial and Graphic Art (Lots 382-386).

Within Rabbinic Autograph Letters (Lots 1-80), manuscripts from rabbis hailing across the breadth of the Jewish world are on offer, including letters by Grand-Rebbe Ben Zion Halberstam of Bobov (Lot 36, Est. $5,000-7,000), Grand-Rebbe Elisha Halberstam of Sanz (Lot 37, Est. $2,000-3,000) and R. Moshe Grunwald, the ‘Arugas HaBosem’ (Lot 34, $2,000-3,000). Also of note is a responsum in the hand of R. Shlomo Ganzfried, author of the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch (Lot 31, Est. $5,000-7,000). Of special significance are a number of lots that contain groupings of letters from rabbis in Israel, America and Europe. These curated lots will tremendously enhance any collection. See Lots 9-12, 20-24, 26, 61, 65, 70.

Within Rabbinic Artifacts (Lots 81-88), a number of spiritually infused items from Chassidic Rebbes are featured, including a Tefillin Bag from the household of Grand-Rebbe Yoel Teitelbaum of Satmar (Lot 81, Est. $1,000-2,000), the Yarmulke of Grand-Rebbe Mordechai Hager of Vizhnitz(Lot 83, Est. $1,000-1,500) and a Protective Amulet from Grand-Rebbe Elimelech Alter Paneth of Dej (Lot 85, Est. $300-600).

Within Manuscripts (Lots 89-106), a Soviet-Era Manuscript Prayerbook (Lot 99, Est. $3,000-5,000) is a highly unique artifact, testifying to the determination of countless Jews to stand true to their faith. An exquisite 19th Century Tehillim Manuscript (Lot 98, Est. $7,000-10,000) is of note, along with a Miniature Seder Keriath Shema from the 18^th century (Lot 96, Est. $1,000-2,000). A few grouped lots provide a rare opportunity for inquisitive collectors; collected manuscripts of Torah thoughts and prayers can be found at Lots 92-93 and 95.

Another series of wide-ranging and fascinating items is found within General Printed Books (Including American-Judaica) (Lots 107-181). This category includes the First English Jewish Cookbook (Lot 137, Est. $4,000-6,000), a 1939 Polish Telephone Directory (Lot 178, Est. $3,000-5,000) several Japanese-Jewish Items (Lots 158-164) and the 1679, Amsterdam First Edition of Isaac Fernando Cardoso’s impressive apologetic work, Las Excelencias de los Hebreos (Lot 147, Est. $1,200-1,800).

The largest category within the auction, Hebrew Printed Books (Lots 182-381), stemming almost entirely from a private collection, contains such a wide selection of materials, one is strongly encouraged to browse the catalogue itself. First Editions abound, selections of which include the First Editions of R. Tzvi Hirsch of Nadvorna’s Tzemach Hashem LaTzvi (Lot 226, Est. $2,000-3,000) and R. Jacob de Castro’s Erech Lechem (Lot 215, Est. 400-600). Also noteworthy is the First Latin Edition of R. Abraham Farissol’s Iggereth Orchoth Olam (Lot 260, Est. $600-900) as well as the First Edition of R. Aryeh Leib of Lancut’s Arba’ah Charashim (Lot 227, Est. $1,000-1,500). Here too, a number of grouped lots provide a unique opportunity to broaden one’s library with vintage Hebrew texts (Lots 207, 241, 274, 293, 313, 345 and 364).

The final category within the sale, that of Ceremonial and Graphic Art (Lots 382-386) contains a Bronze Statue of Liberty Menorah (Lot 382, Est. $1,200-1,800) as well as two Large American Synagogue Signs (Lots 383-4, Est. $5,000-6,000) and two American Wooden Synagogal Decalogues (Lots 385-6, Est. $1,200-1800 & $700-1,000).

The sale can be divided into six primary categories: Rabbinic Autograph Letters (Lots 1-80), Rabbinic Artifacts (Lots 81-88), Manuscripts (Lots 89-106), General Printed Books (Including American-Judaica) (Lots 107-181), Hebrew Printed Books (Lots 182-381), and finally, Ceremonial and Graphic Art (Lots 382-386). Within Rabbinic Autograph Letters (Lots 1-80), manuscripts from rabbis hailing across the breadth of the Jewish world are on offer, including letters by Grand-Rebbe Ben Zion Halberstam of Bobov (Lot 36, Est. $5,000-7,000), Grand-Rebbe Elisha Halberstam of Sanz (Lot 37, Est. $2,000-3,000) and R. Moshe Grunwald, the ‘Arugas HaBosem’ (Lot 34, $2,000-3,000). Also of note is a responsum in the hand of R. Shlomo Ganzfried, author of the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch (Lot 31, Est. $5,000-7,000). Of special significance are a number of lots that contain groupings of letters from rabbis in Israel, America and Europe. These curated lots will tremendously enhance any collection. See Lots 9-12, 20-24, 26, 61, 65, 70. Within Rabbinic Artifacts (Lots 81-88), a number of spiritually infused items from Chassidic Rebbes are featured, including a Tefillin Bag from the household of Grand-Rebbe Yoel Teitelbaum of Satmar (Lot 81, Est. $1,000-2,000), the Yarmulke of Grand-Rebbe Mordechai Hager of Vizhnitz(Lot 83, Est. $1,000-1,500) and a Protective Amulet from Grand-Rebbe Elimelech Alter Paneth of Dej (Lot 85, Est. $300-600). Within Manuscripts (Lots 89-106), a Soviet-Era Manuscript Prayerbook (Lot 99, Est. $3,000-5,000) is a highly unique artifact, testifying to the determination of countless Jews to stand true to their faith. An exquisite 19th Century Tehillim Manuscript (Lot 98, Est. $7,000-10,000) is of note, along with a Miniature Seder Keriath Shema from the 18^th century (Lot 96, Est. $1,000-2,000). A few grouped lots provide a rare opportunity for inquisitive collectors; collected manuscripts of Torah thoughts and prayers can be found at Lots 92-93 and 95. Another series of wide-ranging and fascinating items is found within General Printed Books (Including American-Judaica) (Lots 107-181). This category includes the First English Jewish Cookbook (Lot 137, Est. $4,000-6,000), a 1939 Polish Telephone Directory (Lot 178, Est. $3,000-5,000) several Japanese-Jewish Items (Lots 158-164) and the 1679, Amsterdam First Edition of Isaac Fernando Cardoso’s impressive apologetic work, Las Excelencias de los Hebreos (Lot 147, Est. $1,200-1,800). The largest category within the auction, Hebrew Printed Books (Lots 182-381), stemming almost entirely from a private collection, contains such a wide selection of materials, one is strongly encouraged to browse the catalogue itself. First Editions abound, selections of which include the First Editions of R. Tzvi Hirsch of Nadvorna’s Tzemach Hashem LaTzvi (Lot 226, Est. $2,000-3,000) and R. Jacob de Castro’s Erech Lechem (Lot 215, Est. 400-600). Also noteworthy is the First Latin Edition of R. Abraham Farissol’s Iggereth Orchoth Olam (Lot 260, Est. $600-900) as well as the First Edition of R. Aryeh Leib of Lancut’s Arba’ah Charashim (Lot 227, Est. $1,000-1,500). Here too, a number of grouped lots provide a unique opportunity to broaden one’s library with vintage Hebrew texts (Lots 207, 241, 274, 293, 313, 345 and 364). The final category within the sale, that of Ceremonial and Graphic Art (Lots 382-386) contains a Bronze Statue of Liberty Menorah (Lot 382, Est. $1,200-1,800) as well as two Large American Synagogue Signs (Lots 383-4, Est. $5,000-6,000) and two American Wooden Synagogal Decalogues (Lots 385-6, Est. $1,200-1800 & $700-1,000).
