Born in Carpentras in about the year 1578 the author converted from Judaism to Catholicism, assuming the name “Philippe d’Aquin” (after Aquino, the place of his conversion). He was soon appointed professor of Hebrew Language by King Louis XIII and resided in Paris until his death in 1650. See JE, Vol. II, p. 38.
