Louis Des Hayes, Baron de Courmenin, undertook various diplomatic missions on behalf of Louis XIII. In 1621 the king sent him to the Levant, Jerusalem in order to establish a French consulate, wrest the Holy Places into French control and present votive offerings in the name of the king at the Holy Sepulchre. The mission was successfully accomplished and the envoy returned to France in 1622.
