Charles A. Vanik (1913-2007) was a Democratic congressman from Ohio. In 1974, Vanik sponsored the Jackson-Vanik amendment designed to allow Jews to emigrate from the Soviet Union. In this letter, the Prime Minister thanks Vanik for being supportive of Rabin's participation in the recent signing ceremony of the Oslo Accords in Washington between himself and Palestinian Chairman Yasser Arafat. Two years later, Rabin would be gunned down by an assassin opposed to the Prime Minister's peace process.
