(SOUTH AFRICA)

Indenture between Henry Cohen, "Diamond Merchant," and Isaac Jonas, Moses Jonas and Jonah Jonas ("Jonas Brothers"), "Diamond Merchants". With English tax stamps. On outer panel: "Second Mortgage on certain Farms known as Elandsdrift and Hendriksdal in the District of Leydenburg, South Africa."

Holborn (London?): 15th February 1884

Est: $500 - $700
In exchange for a loan of 3,851 pounds from the Jonas Brothers, Henry Cohen agreed to indenture to them "his estate share and interest of and in certain farms known as Elandsdrift and Hendriksdal situate in the District of Lydenburg in South Africa." Research has shown that the area in question was the site of diamond mines. Our document thus records early involvement of British Jewry in South Africa's diamond mining enterprise
