Joseph Johlson (1777-1851), son of the rabbi of Fulda, was associated with the German Reform movement. He is billed on the title of the book as: "Religionslehrer an der israelitischen Bürger=und Realschule zu Frankfurt a.M." [Teacher of Religion at the Israelite Real School of Frankfurt a/Main]. Nonetheless, his catechism for Jewish children was deemed appropriate as an educational vehicle by Isaac Leeser, chief proponent of American Orthodoxy, who took upon himself to translate the book into English. Leeser published his translation in Philadelphia in 1830 under the title, Instruction in the Mosaic Religion. See L.J. Sussman, Isaac Leeser and the Making of American Judaism (1995), pp. 67-70
