PANETH, MENACHEM MENDEL

(Admor of Dej and author of Ma'agalei Tzedek, 1818-85). Autograph Letter Signed. With 5-page manuscript attached.

The five-pages (written in another hand) that follow the opening autograph letter, lists some 230 names (both women as well as men) who donated money toward the Rebbe’s appeal benefitting his Chassidim in Tzfas and Teveriyah. Six pages.

The son of R. Yechezkel Paneth (the Marei Yechezkel), who had been a disciple of R. Mendel of Rymanov, R. Menachem Mendel Paneth studied in the yeshiva of the Chasam Sofer in Pressburg. He served as rabbi of Urișor and Deyzh, and later as chief rabbi of Transylvania. Each section of this manuscript is headed by the name of the gabbai who collected and forwarded funds to the Rebbe. The amounts are noted in gold currency, and range from modest contributions of one coin, to a few large ones in the amount of 50, 60, and even 100. The names of the gabbaim are: R. Asher Anshel of Bistric (Bistrica), R. Shlomo Ka’tz Rosenberg of Toshnad, R. Avraham Eliezer Citron, R. Baruch Tzvi ben Yosef Yochanan of Senderov, R. Akiva Rothman, R. Mordechai Yehuda of Entradam, R. Avraham Yosef Klein, R. Moshe Weiss of Lapos, and R. Yisrael Loewy of Karlsburg.
