Born near Kovno, R. Baruch Markus was a student of both the Alter of Kelm and the Alter of Slabodka. In 1907, he immigrated to Eretz Israel where he taught in Jerusalem’s Torath Chaim Yeshiva. Selected to serve as Haifa’s chief rabbi, he occupied the post for 55 years, leaving an indelible mark on the city.
