summary

R. Abraham Joshua Heschel, rabbi of Apt (the "Apter Ruv") and later Mezhebizh was one of the most esteemed figures within the early Chassidic movement. Oheiv Yisrael (“Lover of Israel”), is a profound collection of Chassidic homilies. Grand Rabbi Chaim Halberstam of Sanz is recorded to have declared of the Oheiv Yisrael: “A Jew should even pawn his Sabbath garments to acquire a copy of such a work.” See H. M. Rabinowicz, Hasidism: The Movement and Its Masters (1988) pp. 138-9.
