summary

First appeared in Poland in 1924, this children’s story tells the tale of young Jack (’Dzek’ in the original) and his experiences of social and political life in America of the time. Korczak clearly displays a fondness for the co-operative economic system. It is surprising that draconian Nazi laws of censorship allowed this to to be published in Germany given the book’s obvious fondness for the rush of American urban life.
