Description

Hebrew and English on facing pages. Two titles. Opening blank with lengthy manuscript prayer by Henry J. Jacobs following the birth of a son born to his wife Judith. "…may he be a light among his brethren of the house of Israel…" Annoto Bay, Jamaica, 6th April, 1845.

summary

Prayer by Henry Jacobs, resident of Annotto Bay, located along the northeast coast of the island of Jamaica. No historical record of Henry J. Jacobs has been located. This heartfelt blessing written for his baby son, is his only material legacy. See Barnett & Wright, The Jews of Jamaica: Tombstone Inscriptions (1997) p. 114 for a record of the death in 1862 of his wife, Judith Jacobs. Jewish settlement in this Caribbean island is a history of brave entrepreneurs who created a successful bridge between the Old World and the New.
