summary

The author is a ‘Pshatist,’ focussed on reaching the simple meaning of the verses. R. Spira’s method of carefully analyzing the etymological basis of each word would inspire his great-nephew, Rabbiner Samson Raphael Hirsch. Indeed, R. Hirsch quotes R. Spira in his commentary to the Pentateuch. See E.M. Klugman, Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch: A Biography (1996) pp. 2-3.
