summary

Within the historic Meah Shearim neighborhood of Jerusalem reside many of the hardline factions of Orthodox Judaism, including the base of operations of the Eidah HaChareidis. The present lot is a collection of announcements issued during the Mandate years and the first decade or so of Israel’s existence, providing a window into an otherwise cloistered community. Includes documents such as: * Call not to join a public fast day on behalf of European Jewry in the early 1940’s. * Appeal to say daily Psalms during Israel’s War of Independence. * Neturei Karta poster offering ‘Will Not Submit (to the Zionist Regime)’ certificates to all who desire. * Calls to improve the spiritual treatment of new Sephardic immigrants. * Appeal to inspect religious qualifications of various Kollel stipend recipients. * Advertisement for Rabbinic Chanukah Lectures on the topic ‘The Contemporary Hellenism’. * Call not to give support, financial or otherwise, to Jewish defense forces in 1947.
