summary

First Catholic Bible Printed in Latin America. Important and rare edition (only five institutional holdings in the US). This Catholic Bible was issued in direct response to the Protestant Bible printed in Mexico just a few years earlier in 1831-33 (see Kestenbaum Auction Sale 75, lot 127). Upon its publication, this Torres Amat edition became overwhelmingly popular due to the nature predominantly Catholic of the population of Mexico.

Lightly browned or stained in places, tear to title of vol. 17, some worming in vols. 10 and 14. Contemporary uniform gilt-ruled speckled calf with morocco spine labels, rubbed, foot of spine of vols. 1 and 10 chipped. 12mo.
