FRAMED EMBROIDERY ON SILK, "KADDISH"
New York, 1912; Master: M. Herrmann.
summary
The Kaddish prayer mentions neither the name of G-d nor death; it is in fact a statement of praise of the "Great Name," recited in group prayer services when a quorum of at least ten men are present. The custom of a mourner reciting this aloud developed during the 13th century; this then became known as the "mourner's prayer." In certain synagogues, a large print version would hang in the sanctuary to aid in its recital. A finely handcrafted textile version such as this one is extremely rare, and testifies to the dedication of the artist.
