summary

Trans-Jordan was a part of the area the British Mandate for Palestine was responsible for. In 1921, Abdullah, son of the Sharif Hussein of Mecca (who fought along side the British General T. E. Lawrence during World War I),settled in the Jordanian territory and was recognized by Winston Churchill, then British colonial secretary, as Emir of Trans-Jordan. In the agreement of 1928, the Emirate of Trans-Jordan was excluded from the articles of the Mandate that related to the Jewish National Homeland. “His Britannic Majesty is prepared to recognize the existence of an independent Government in Trans-Jordan under the rule of His Highness the Emir of Trans-Jordan, provided that such Government is constitutional ad places his Britannic Majesty in a position to fulfil his international obligations in respect of that territory.” Abdullah was crowned king of Trans-Jordan in 1946, and its independence was immediately recognized by the British. In the Treaty of Alliance signed in 1948, the two kingdoms agreed; “There shall be perpetual peace and friendship between His Britannic Majesty and His Majesty the King of the Hashimite Kingdom of Trans-Jordan. A close alliance shall continue... in consecration of their friendship, their cordial understanding and their good relations.” For a history of the Hashimite Kingdom of Jordan see R. Patai, The Kingdom of Jordan (1958)
