summary

A member of the influential Amsterdam Sasportas family, Solomon served as Rabbi of Nice in the Provençe region of France from 1690 until his death in 1724. Solomon Adhan hailed from Tãfîlãlet, Morocco and first lived in Tetuán. He left for Gibraltar and arrived in Amsterdam in 1720 to collect funds to redeem his family and synagougue which had fallen into the hands of nomadic Arabs in Tãfîlãlet. (See EJ V, col 1224). The name, Sasportas indicates that the family originally came from a place called Seisportas ("six gates" in Spanish). It is in recognition of this that R. Solomon called his work Shesh Sha’arim (“six gates” in Hebrew)
