Steinschneider no. 3454; UNKNOWN TO VINOGRAD

summary

AN EXTREMELY RARE WORK UNKOWN TO VINOGRAD AND MOST LIKELY NOT SEEN BY STEINSCHNIEDER. Confusion exist in the bibliographic literature in relation to this book. Vinograd lists a work by Solomon ben Eliezer Halevi entitled Avodath Halevi, with a sub-title Moreh Tzedek (Vinograd, Lublin 22). He describes it as a listing of the precepts, and identifies the place of publication as Lublin, and the year of publication as 1571. However, Vinograd does not cite the pagination and it is likely that he did not see a copy. He notes Steinschneider’s suggestion that the place of publication may indeed be Cracow. Steinschneider lists that book as a third edition of Solomon ben Eliezer Halevi’s Avodath Halevi-Moreh Tzedek and cites a pagination compatible with the present work. (St. Cat. Bodl. no. 6912.3. He identifies the place of publication as either Lublin or Cracow and the date of publication as 16th or 17th century. However, the present copy is clearly an index of Biblical citations in the Talmud and not a listing of the precepts at all. The similarity of title and typographical format may have been the source of the confusion. It is however, quite clear that the present work is neither of the works cited by the bibliographers above. In fact, this work is an exceedingly rare anonymous index of Biblical citations in the Talmud which Steinschneider records in his listing of anonymous works, citing Wolf. It is unlikely he ever saw a copy
