summary

The name Shabthai Bass (1641-1718) is familiat to every student of Rashi's commentary to the Pentateuch. Bass authored wehat (due to its inclusion in the Mikra'oth gedoloth edition of the Pentateuch) what has come to be the most popular supercommentary on Rashi -Siphethei Chachamim. However, it is possible that a far more important contribution was made by Bass to the field of Hebrew bibliography, in which he was a pioneer. His Siphethei Yesheinim, first published in 1680, is the first Hebraic bibliography. It contains some 2,200 Hebraic titles. The second part of this 1806 edition presents a list, compiled by the printer, of a further 700 titles published since the original 1680 edition. See EJ, Vol. 4, col. 313
