summary

Hutter’s hexaglot Bible, an extraordinarily ambitious feat of scholarship. Text in six columns extending across opposite pages. Featuring (from left to right): Aramaic, Hebrew, Greek, Latin, German and Italian (in place of French as stated in title). Hutter produced four issues of this polyglot, with the sixth language differing - Sloven, Italian, Low-German, and French - depending on the intended audience. In the words of David S. Berkowitz, “The parade of linguistic learning is (little) short of stupefying” (Remembrance of Creation, p. 104).
pp. (6), 287, 851, 319. Initial leaves frayed, variously worn and stained in places, occasional light worming. Contemporary lavishly blind-tooled vellum over thick wooden boards, with Valmadonna-custom gilt-tooled morocco spine-labels. Thick folio.
