The Herut Party, led by Menachem Begin, emerged after the Israeli War of Independence from the ranks of the former underground fighting force Irgun Tzeva'i Le'umi (Etzel), or as it was known to English speakers, the Irgun.
Herut was to the right of David Ben Gurion's Mapai party, both in terms of its nationalism and its accommodation of Jewish religion
