summary

This extensive volume may be referred to as the “penal code of the Inquisition.” As one might expect, a special section is devoted to the Jews: "De Judaeis" (ff. 242-46). Henry Charles Lea, historian of the Spanish Inquisition, commended the works of Bishop Simancas as useful for obtaining an accurate picture of Spanish inquisitorial practice. He noted that in contrast with voluminous such works in Italian, references to Spanish inquisitorial practice are few. He attributed this to the Spanish desire to shroud the inquisitorial process in secrecy. See H. C. Lea, A History of the Inquisition of Spain, Vol. II (1906) pp. 475-76, note 2.
pp. 642, (1), (1 blank). Dampwrinkled, trace marginal worming in few places. Contemporary calf, gilt, rubbed. Folio.
