summary
The sum deposited with the officials of the Community by Señora Israel was to be disbursed annually for her upkeep. On the first page of the document, we have the actual agreement. At the bottom of the page, we have the first three entries by the Gabbai (the Treasurer in charge of charity), followed by 29 more entries on the verso by succeeding generations of Gabba'im, taking us to the final entry dated "18 Agosto 1807." All attest that the necessary amount was duly paid – "Pago." (As this is the final entry, we must assume that Señora Israel passed away that year.) Thus, our document spans roughly 40 years in the life of the Portuguese-Jewish community of Amsterdam.
Spinossa-Cattela was a prominent family in the Amsterdam community. See M.H. Gans, Memorbook, p. 358
