summary

Among the stipulations of the Va'ad, recently established after General Allenby's liberation of Jerusalem from Ottoman rule at the end of World War I, is that the Aschkenazic community remain religious in character, and is to be administered by Torah law exclusively. This would undergo dramatic change following the arrival to Jerusalem of a modernistic Zionist leadership and the wresting of power from the Old Yishuv.
