Rabbi Jonathan Eybeschutz was arguably the greatest Talmudist of his age. He began his rabbinic career in Prague, later became rabbi of Metz, Alsace, and finished as the rabbi of the German tripartite community of Altona-Hamburg-Wandsbek. See EJ, Vol. VI, cols. 1074-1076
