summary

Giacomo Meyerbeer (1791-1864) was a noted opera composer, and the first great exponent of Grand Opera. He was born Jacob Liebmann Beer, to a wealthy Jewish family in Tasdorf, near Berlin. Despite a career that was made difficult due to anti-Semitism (Richard Wagner for one, comes to mind), Meyerbeer remained a self-identifying Jew his entire life
