summary

“The first Hebrew Bible with Arabic numeration of chapters and verses.” (Fuks). The first engraved Hebrew title with the biblical scenes is scarce and is often missing in many copies. This edition became the standard for generations. In addition to the Hebrew introduction signed by the correctors Samuel de Caceres and Eliahu Leon, it contains a lengthy Preface by Johannes Leusden, Professor of the Sacred Tongue at Utrecht, as well as a Commendation by three Professors of Theology at the University of Utrecht including Gisbertus Voetius. Leusden states that the text has been compared with a manuscript dated 1299 and another from the same period written in Toledo. The Hebrew introduction states that they were helped by the Tikkun of the renowned scribe Michael Yehuda Leon. According to Darlow & Moule, Athias received a gold chain and medal from the States-General of Holland for publishing this Bible.
ff. [9], 234, 185, 186, 196, [2]. A few leaves frayed at edges with slight repairs. 8vo.
