summary
There is considerable confusion regarding the date of the first edition of this seminal Chassidic work. Friedberg (Lamed 622) records 1806, however, this is a clear misreading of the chronogram. Ben Ya’akov and Weiner correctly present the date as 1808. Yaari, in Ha’dephus Ha’ivri Be’ostraha (in: Alei Sepher, vol. I (1975), p. 123, no. 34), records that the publishers of the second edition (1821) state that, “the first edition was published 13 years ago in Ostrog”
The present copy is therefore the definative First Edition.
ff. (1), 162. Mispaginated, though complete. Neat marginal repairs on a few leaves, previous owmer stamp “Josef Schneid of Przemysl” on title, marginal annotation on f.1. Recent calf-backed boards. 4to
