Ryback’s passion as an artist is most clearly apparent in his moving portrayal of vanishing shtetl life. The characters of the Pale of Settlement are warmly sentimentalized in his art. In this illustration, a young shtetl boy is pictured with his cow, his mischievous grin suggests his youth, despite his involvment in the economic life of the shtetl
