summary

Collected articles by Rabbinic authorities, concerning the Halachic perspective of military conduct. Commissioned by the Central Command of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) Chaplaincy, following the Yom Kippur War of 1973. The volume gave rise to controversy and prompt censorship due to an article by Rabbi Avraham Avidan “Purity of Arms According to Halacha” (pp.25-31). Avidan determined that Arab civilians may be subject to severe physical pressure if there is a suspicion they were in possession of knowledge of imminent danger to Israelis. Ultimately, Avidan concludes, “no Arab can be trusted.” (p.31). This article met considerable criticism in the Knesset and Israeli press, and as a result, the entire print-run of this book was destroyed before distribution. There are no recorded copies in Israel public collections, including the JNUL
pp.100. Original color printed wrappers. 8vo
