summary
The papal Inquisitor and Dominican monk Jacob Hoogstraaten intensely antagonistic toward Humanism, supported Pfefferkorn in his controversy with Johannes Reuchlin, charging Reuchlin with heresy and conspiracy with the Jews. Hoogstraaten countered Reuchlin’s De Arta Cabalistica (Hagenau, 1519) (see Lot ***), in praise of the Kabbalah with Destructio Cabalae (Cologne, 1519) in which he attacked the Kabbalah as anti-Christian and heretical.
Father Johann Ingewinkel, a Dutchman, was tutor to Charles V, and was brought to the papal court by Pope Adrian VI. A ferocious supportor of Catholicism, in this work, Ingewinkel affirms the views of Father Jacob Hoogstraaten against Johannes Reuchlin
