summary
Rabbi Jacob Ettlinger, better known in scholarly circles as the "Aruch Laner" after his famous Talmudic commentary. "His approach to study was original, creative and productive of many hiddushim (novellae)...After one period of intensive study of the tractate Sanhedrin, he had compiled sufficient material for his famous publication, the Aruch Laner. This was to be the first of a rich literary library which he was to produce."
