summary
Poem written in memory of the seven victims of a fire at a five-story building at 35 Essex Street, New York City. Fatal fires were common in these over-crowded Lower East Side tenements. The horse-drawn fire-truck notes the author sadly, arrived too late. He conludes this melancholy poem: “Scenes like this you could only find in the Golden Land.” Zavodnik, was a jester and bard.
