summary

A descendent of a prominent Spanish family, R. Joseph of Salonica was a profound mystic, who was regarded as as one of the greatest Talmudists of the fifteenth century. His saintliness and extreme asceticism was exemplified by Azulai's comment in Shem Hagedolim that R. Joseph did not sleep in a bed for forty years. Along with R.Joseh Karo, a "Maggid" is reported to have communicated heavenly secrets to R. Joseph.
