A priest from Calabria, Italy, from 1514 Guidecerius served as the first professor of Hebrew at the University of Rome under the direct patronage of Pope Leo X. With the sack of Rome in 1527, he transferred himself to Paris where he continued to publish a number of small works on Hebrew scholarship. Roth surmises that the title is based on Abraham de Balmes’ Mikneh Avraham (Venice, 1523) which in its Latin tranlation published simultaneously for Gentile use, went by the similar name “Peculium Abrahami.” See: C.
