summary

The First Prayer-Book Printed with a Spanish Translation. Exceptionally Rare. Jnul and Bodleian Copies Incomplete. Only One Complete Copy Extant (JTSLA) Simultaneous to the Ferrara Machzor of the same year, this remarkably rare Venetian edition was produced for use by the Marranos for distribution throughout the Spanish-Portuguese Diaspora. The translation incorporates “the first free rendition ever published of medieval Hebrew poetry into a modern European language.” See H.P. Salomon, The American Sephardi Vol. VI (1973) pp.79-87. Salomon corrects Roth’s notion to prove that there was no Spanish translation of the Sephardi Prayers prior to 1552. See C. Roth, Jewish Printers of non-Jewish Books, in: Studies in Bibliography and Booklore (1972) p.53; also C. Roth, The Role of Spanish in the Marrano Diaspora in: Hispanic Studies in Honour of I. González Llubera (1959) pp.1-10
ff.(1-5, provided in facsimile),1-319, (320-22, provided in facsimile). Trimmed, lightly stained and worn from use, few marginal paper repairs. Contemporary vellum, rubbed. 16mo
