Description
This elegant goblet stands on a ring base; the baulster shaft supports a cup which broadens towards the rim, with gilt interior, and domed lid with ball finial. The applique decoration, in the form of grape clusters and leaves, ornaments both the base and the lower section of the cup. The front of the cup bears a Decalogue with Hebrew text, flanked by lions rampant supporting a crown, and below, the Hebrew letter “S.” Marked on lid and base; marks unclear. H: 235mm.
summary
Note the handmade nuts which attach the decorative band to the base. The Hebrew initial probably refers to the name of the patron who commissioned this unusual cup. Its importance and the presence of a lid suggest its function as an Elijah cup, at the Passover Seder.
