summary

Published during the second period of the great Hebrew poet’s career. in this collection of narrative poems, Tchernichowsky describes with affection the traditional Jewish way of life that he recalls from his childhood in the village of Mikhailovka, Russia. The poetry of this period reveals the author’s ambiguous attitude toward Jewish heritage and destiny. His style contains an expression of both sentimental lyricism and restrained epic narrative.
