One of the foremost Talmudists of the mid-eighteenth century , Steinhardt was exceptionally conservative in his approach. According to JE, XI col. 543, upon appointment as Chief Rabbi to Nieder-Ehenheim in Lower Alsace in 1755, Steinhardt induced the Lord of the Manor to forbid men and women from dancing together
