summary
The Jewish Legion was a military formation of Jewish volunteers in World War I who fought in the British Army for the liberation of Eretz Israel from Turkish rule. This exceptional charity-box dates from a time following the publication of the Balfour Declaration when American volunteers began enlisting in the Legion in earnest. In February, 1918, the first group of 150 volunteers left New York for military training. See EJ, X cols. 69-76.
