summary
Important ideological pamphlet systematically refuting the thesis of the Reform Movement and defending the eternity of Divine Law. The publication was instigated by the champion of neo-Orthodoxy in Germany, Jacob Ettlinger who mobilized scores of European Rabbis to place their name to this attack.
It was precipitated by the proceedings of the Braunschweig Conference, organized by Abraham Geiger and Ludwig Philippson in the Summer of 1844, an attempt to confer and establish common principles and a common program among isolated Reform Congregations in Gemany.
The Braunschweig Conference and the furious response that resulted, quite clearly drew, for both sides, very firm lines between Orthodoxy and Reform. See J. Bleich, An Innovative Response to Reform in the Nineteenth Century, in: Yeshiva University Museum Catalogue, Ashkenaz (1988) pp.101-03.
