summary

In this fascinating array of documentation from Hungary, Austria, and China, we see how world political upheavals impacted upon the life of an individual Jew, photographer Jacob Glanz. Various documents are on the stationery of the Jewish Community of Szaszvar, Hungary; the Rabbinate of Vienna; the German Gestapo, Vienna; the Italian Shipping Company Lloyd of Trieste; U.N.R.R.A. Shanghai; and finally, the Jewish Community of Shanghai. Included is a “Vollmacht” or, power of attorney Glanz made out to his daughter Gertrud, datelined “Dachau, 14 January, 1939.” Also, a “Reisepass” or passport issued by the Deutsches Reich, the first page of which, contains a letter J for “Jude.” Between the handwritten first and last names “Jakob Glanz” is stamped the middle name “Israel,” de rigeur for all Jewish males under Nazi law. The many colorful stamps speak for themselves: The Austrian border control at Arnoldstein on the Austrian-Italian border; the Italian entry stamp at Tarvisio-Ferrovia; the visa issued by the Chinese Consulate at Milan, Italy; the stamp of debarkation from the port of Genoa; the Harbour Police of Colombo (capital of Sri Lanka, then Ceylon); the Police Department of the Port of Hong Kong. etc. Glanz died in Shanghai in 1948
