Description

Collection of 364 Typed Letters Signed to President Franklin D. Roosevelt by Orthodox Rabbis throughout the United States. Imploring the President to provide refuge to persecuted Jews. *With original letter from the Council of Orthodox Jewish Organizations for the Rescue of the Jews of Europe, appealing to all American Rabbis to take part in this Presidential lobbying exercise. April 15, 1943

summary

Also known as the Vaad Hatzalah, the Council sponsored numerous public efforts in seeking to rescue European Jewry. The vast range of American communities represented by these letters to President Roosevelt are indicative of the overwhelming attempts in tackling the grave situation. See D. Kranzler, Thy Brother's Blood, The Orthodox Jewish Response during the Holocaust (1987) pp.3-4,31; H. Lookstein, Were We Our Brothers' Keepers? (1985) p.201
