summary

Eliezer Fleckeles (1754-1826) was one of the foremost disciples of Ezekiel Landau, the “Noda Be’yehuda.” After Landau’s death, he was appointed as Chief of the Beith Din, of Prague. He was one on the vehement opponents of the Frankists, devoting many sermons in denouncing them. His commentary on the Passover Hagadah, Ma’aseh BeRav Elazer, was published in Prague 1818 (Yudlov 589). A preliminary comparison of this manuscript with the published version indicated that this manuscript is a first draft. In some cases it is in a different order and somewhat shortened form. Other portions are entirely unpublished. For example, a startling explanation for utilizing the Goblet of Elijah (see f.1), postulated by Fleckeles’ son-in-law, Isaac Spitz. The title page bears an autograph inscription by Prof. Solomon Hirsch Lieben of Prague, dated 1885, thanking God that “the holy writings of our great Rabbi came into my hands.”
