AUCTION 73 - JUNE 22ND 2017
Headlining Kestenbaum & Company’s auction of Fine Judaica were a number of Early Printed Books including Jacob ben Asher's Arba'ah Turim, the second incunable edition (Soncino, c. 1490) which garnered $70,000 (Lot 173). The rare first edition of the Tosfos Yom-Tov's Ma'adanei Melech, Prague, 1619 achieved $8000 (Lot 128), and an extremely rare text by the Marrano Abraham Pereira, Livro que contem o termo é condiçoes... Amsterdam, 1659, earned $10,000 against a pre-sale estimate of $3,000-5,000 (Lot 159).
In the Manuscripts section of the auction was an an important, early manuscript of the Halachic Code Tur Choshen Mishpat which predated the first printed edition, it fetched $25,000 (Lot 299). Also noteworthy among the manuscripts was an important intellectual work, an autograph commentary to the Book of Ezekiel by Samuel David Luzzatto (commonly known as the Shadal) which brought in $13,000 (Lot 300). An elaborately engraved Dutch, 18th century Scroll of Esther from the estate of the late Rabbi Dr. David de Sola Pool achieved $11,500 (Lot 301). Among American related manuscripts was the earliest known Chevrah Kadisha manual in the United States (Richmond, VA, 1823) written by Jacob Mordecai, that was hammered at $12,000 (Lot 8).
A final highlight: A 10th-century kabbalistic fragment originally unearthed in the Cairo Genizah and among the very oldest extant manuscripts of Heichaloth literature - it had been offered in the celebrated Sassoon sale in the 1970’s and subsequently appeared at a Kestenbaum auction (hammer-price $5000) – sold on Thursday for $16,000 against an estimate of $5,000-7,000 (Lot 287).
Kestenbaum & Company’s forthcoming auction: Important Hebrew Printed Books: An Historic Collection will take place in the Fall of 2017.
