The author Joseph Brill (1839-1919), better known by his pen name Iyov of Minsk, was “one of the foremost satirists of the nineteenth century…As a humorist he displayed a keen sense of the ludicrous…a delicate irony and a deep pathos.” (Davidson, Parody in Jewish Literature pp. 88, 96). Here, Brill humorously describes the lives of the wealthy including their views on gambling and on charity.
