Born in Lodz, expressionist painter Jankel Adler (1895-1949) moved to Germany where he studied with Paul Klee, along with Picasso and Leger. Hitler’s regime displayed Adler’s art at the Entartete Kunst exhibition - an example of “degenerate art” which caused him to flee and take refuge in Paris. He volunteered for the Free Polish Forces during WWII, later living in Scotland, the only one among his nine Polish-Jewish siblings to have survived the war.
