Born into a rabbinic family of Spanish-Castillian origin and long resident in the Holy Land, Castel studied in his father’s Jerusalem yeshiva before attending the Bezalel Art School, where his teacher Shmuel Ben-David, encouraged him to study art in Paris. Castel’s art combines European Expressionism with Eastern motifs, such as the use of ancient scripts.
