A thoughtful, conservative rabbi’s interpretation of Judaism in relation to contemporary society, especially conditions of labor and poverty. “The true social question is the question of social justice… It has been the question of all ages” (introduction). Active in promoting the social welfare of the communities in which he lived, Henry Berkowitz (1857-1924) graduated in 1883 among the first graduating class of the Hebrew Union College. He later rose to lead Congregation Rodeph Shalom of Philadelphia.
