Richard Beer-Hoffman (1866-1945) was an Austrian-Jewish dramatist and poet. He is credited with having employed stream of consciousness in his writings before the technique was made famous by James Joyce, Marcel Proust, et al. His Schlaflied für Mirjam has withstood the test of time and is still widely anthologized. The poem was written for the author's daughter Miriam in Vienna in 1897. According to the explanatory note on f. 4 this very limited edition was produced exclusively "Für Freunde."
